The Scribbler was originally commissioned by the Australian Lygon Arts Festival as a work-in-progress for their 1990 season. It was titled "K", and presented as a "Son et Lumiere" performance - the music being supported by a collection of images from Kafka's Prague, as well as line drawings, architectural diagrams and textural close-ups. The original plans for a full scale orchestral rendition of the work at the following year's festival had to be cancelled when the administration lost funding.

Shinjuku Thief embarked on an extensive re-working of the original material shortly after the completion of their debut CD "Bloody Tourist". Whilst the basic musical structure of "K" was retained, there were a number of changes made. Background atmospheres started to assume greater importance (in this instance also incorporating passages of Kafka's text), some of the initially pedestrian progressions were "pushed out" harmonically, and, overall, the work was given a degree of detailing absent in the 1990 version.
