Myths of the Near Future (part three)
If you could plot ambient music, improvisational jazz and pan-cultural world beat on some sort of graph, Mo Boma would be the point where all three lines intersect. "Myths of the Near Future" follows the Mo Boma tradition of creating richly textured, evocative soundscapes that manage to incorporate traditional instrumentation - albeit fleetingly - without bothering with traditional song structure. This is about as far from verse/chorus/verse as you can be while staying on the same map.
It's a very organic sound. From the first track, "Water Baka", you'll get the feeling that you're outside (the "insect noises" help), standing in the middle of some completely foreign yet unthreatening space. These "Myths" are also very much tales of the night - a night-time in an intangible, vibrant Eastern/Asian city rich with warm winds, tantalizing scents and sensuous pleasures. "The Crystal World", with its
voices-turned-to-wind, creates the illusion of a massive place far beyond human comprehension, alien yet full of soothing eurithmy. "Memories of the Space Age" offers a musical adaptation of tribal culture to the high-tech present through a blending of style and rhythm, while the drum-driven "Sannin Bayashi" (which is curiously similar to some of the incidental music from Diablo) hints at further jungle-bound mysteries. "Three Beaches" offers a trio of Harold Budd-like sonic meditations, related but distinct."Myths ..." is an amazing amalgam of sound, vision and palpable emotion.
Imagine a musical collision of past, present and future with times that
never were, like an ancient city full of shiny new computers. There are
many treasures to be found here.GZ, splendidzine.com

I put this CD on without much expectation and was graciously surprised. I found this disk to be the superior of parts 1 and 2- only seemingly too short. Embracing ethnicity with tribal drums and sensualized bass rhythms. An enhanced diverse worldly feel, Pulls one into a rich tapestry of feeling and experience- slight elements of jazz which are unobtrusively woven into the background. Music that carries you. Illustriously groovy.
